• For some, Memorial Day is not much more than the start of the summer vacation season and a good day to get some work done around the house. For many more, it is a day to remember their fallen comrades who helped give us all that chance to be free to do as we choose. To Nick S. D’Angelo, an Army veteran of World War II, the day is one to look back on how fortunate he and the many who returned home are to have so many comrades willing to lay down their lives for them. This year, the honor of being grand marshal of the parade makes the day especially thrilling for D’Angelo. “Being in the VFW is an honor alone, so being grand marshal is like a great dream,” he said from his Traverse Boulevard home. “But for me, the day always starts as a solemn and sad day with the services at the various cemeteries for the people who have fallen.”

• On May 20-21, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh was the first to complete a solo trans-Atlantic flight in his “Spirit of St. Louis” monoplane. Now, 66 years later, students at the famed pilot’s namesake school in the Town of Tonawanda gathered last week to honor the accomplishments of the American aviation pioneer on the anniversary of the completion of Lindbergh’s historic trip. “I think for a long time, we kind of took for granted that the students knew who their school was named after,” said Linda Rosenbaum, program supervisor at the Irving Terrace School. “It probably is something a lot of the adults could use some refresher work on, too.” Friday morning began with a school-wide assembly to view a dramatic portrait by David Palermo, a senior at Kenmore East High School.
